The Vahine dress

I wanted to draw from my mixed cultural upbringing in the design of this dress. Resulting in the traditional silhouette of a Cheong-sam dress, paired with local Tahitian fabric, made in a contemporary Australian setting.

The composition is 100% Cotton(including the trims) printed in Tahiti. The 'Vahine' dress was meticulously designed, featuring handmade buttons and delicate fringing.

The 'Vahine' dress was designed as part of my graduate 'Cotton Creation' at TAFE in 2019.

Inspiration was taken from many places in the making of this dress including Maggie Cheung’s character in the movie “In the mood for love”, fashion designers such as Guo Pei, John Galliano for Christian Dior (1997) and Roberto Cavali (Spring 2003), and old illustrations from China, featuring the Cheong-sam.
